The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) is finalizing a scientific proposal in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to assess microplastic fragments resulting from the accumulation of plastic waste in the marine environment. The initiative, announced by KISR Director General Dr. Faisal Al-Humidan, marks a significant step in understanding the impact of plastic pollution.

During the launch of the “Two Days Without Plastic” campaign, Al-Humidan highlighted KISR’s pioneering role in reducing plastic use through research activities focused on plastic pollution and recycling solid plastic waste. The institute has been conducting in-depth scientific studies on various terrestrial and marine environments, leading to the development of national standards for biodegradable plastic bags and recommendations to relevant government agencies.

The Impact of Plastic Pollution

Plastic waste is considered one of the most hazardous environmental pollutants due to its non-biodegradable nature and toxic components, which have been proven to harm soil, waterways, and living organisms. According to Al-Humidan, KISR has been at the forefront of applying thermal and chemical technologies to produce alternative fuel from plastic waste, transforming it into valuable raw materials. Additionally, the institute has been working on developing environmentally friendly plastic materials and optimizing their recycling processes.

The “Two Days Without Plastic” campaign is part of KISR’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the risks associated with plastic waste accumulation. The campaign includes educational lectures and videos targeting social media users and decision-makers, aiming to promote environmental awareness and encourage the adoption of biodegradable alternatives. Al-Humidan emphasized that such initiatives align with the vision of His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad, which focuses on promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Promoting Sustainability

Lead researcher and head of the Environment and Climate Change Program at KISR, Eng. Masouma Al-Qasimi, explained that the campaign’s launch on November 11 coincides with the anniversary of the Kuwaiti Constitution, reflecting the country’s commitment to preserving its natural resources. The campaign is an extension of the nation’s efforts to build a sustainable future and ensure the well-being of society. A concurrent exhibition received significant support from various national entities, further amplifying the campaign’s message.

As KISR continues to advance its research and initiatives, the next steps are expected to involve further collaboration with government agencies and stakeholders to implement the findings and recommendations from the microplastic assessment. The success of such initiatives will depend on ongoing commitment and cooperation among various sectors to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution.
