صوت أمريكا الإخباري يصمت.. توقف «CBS News Radio» بعد مسيرة حافلة بالأحداث الكبرى – أخبار السعودية
أسدل الستار رسمياً على واحدة من أعرق المؤسسات الإخبارية في الولايات المتحدة، بعدما أنهت إذاعة CBS News بثها مساء (الجمعة)، عقب نحو قرن كامل من العمل في تغطية أبرز الأحداث العالمية والأمريكية.
وكانت الخدمة الإخبارية قد انطلقت لأول مرة في سبتمبر عام 1927، لتصبح خلال عقود طويلة منصة لعدد من أشهر الأصوات الإعلامية في تاريخ الصحافة الأمريكية، من بينهم إدوارد آر. مورو، وروبرت تراوت، ودوغلاس إدواردز، وتشارلز أوسجود، ودان راذر، والعديد من الأصوات المألوفة والموثوقة الأخرى على مدى عقود من تشغيلها.
وقال المذيع المخضرم ستيف كاثان، مقدم برنامج CBS World News Roundup، إن توقف الشبكة يمثل «خسارة لمؤسسة أمريكية حقيقية لعبت دوراً محورياً في تاريخ الإعلام الإخباري».
بدوره، وصف دان راذر الإذاعة بأنها كانت جزءاً أساسياً مما ساهم في توحيد الأمريكيين لسنوات طويلة، مؤكداً أنها ساعدت في نقل الأخبار إلى الجمهور قبل انتشار التلفزيون ووسائل الإعلام الحديثة.
وكانت إدارة الشبكة قد أعلنت في مارس الماضي قرار إغلاق الخدمة الإخبارية، مبررة ذلك بالتحديات الاقتصادية الصعبة التي تواجه قطاع الإعلام.
وفي بيان رسمي، أشاد رئيس CBS News توم سيبروسكي ورئيسة التحرير باري فايس بالدور التاريخي الذي لعبته الإذاعة منذ انطلاقها، مؤكدين أنها كانت أساساً لما بنته المؤسسة الإعلامية على مدار العقود الماضية.
وأشار البيان إلى أن برنامج World News Roundup ظل أطول نشرات الأخبار الإذاعية استمراراً في الولايات المتحدة.
وعلى مدار تاريخها، واكبت الإذاعة العديد من الأحداث المفصلية في التاريخ الحديث، بينها الهجوم على بيرل هاربور، وإنزال النورماندي خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، وأزمة الصواريخ الكوبية عام 1962، وحرب الخليج، وهجمات 11 سبتمبر، وكارثة مكوك الفضاء كولومبيا عام 2003.
كما بثت الإذاعة أول تغطية لسلسلة مباريات الورلد سيريز للبيسبول عام 1938، وأجرت مقابلة شهيرة مع أسطورة اللعبة بيب روث في العام التالي.
ويُعد إدوارد مورو أحد أبرز الأسماء المرتبطة بتاريخ الشبكة، بعدما نقل تقارير ميدانية مؤثرة من أوروبا خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، ومن مدينة لندن أثناء الغارات الألمانية، إضافة إلى تغطيته لمعسكر بوخنفالد النازي بعد انسحاب القوات الألمانية.
ومن أشهر عباراته الإذاعية خلال الحرب: «أنا لا أبحث عن كلمات درامية.. أنا فقط أنقل ما رأيته».
كما استذكرت المراسلة أليسون كيز، تغطيتها لهجمات 11 سبتمبر من مانهاتن السفلى، مؤكدة أن الجمهور كان يحتاج وقتها إلى معرفة ما يجري بشكل مباشر ومن دون تسييس.
وفي الأيام الأخيرة قبل توقف البث، عبّر العاملون في الشبكة عن حزنهم لإغلاق المؤسسة التي اعتبروها جزءاً مهماً من تاريخ الصحافة الإذاعية الأمريكية.
وقالت كيز إن اختفاء الإذاعة سيترك فراغاً هائلاً في مجال الأخبار، مضيفة أنها تشعر بالفخر للعمل داخل هذه المؤسسة التاريخية.
The curtain has officially fallen on one of the most prestigious news institutions in the United States, as CBS News ended its broadcast on Friday evening, after nearly a full century of covering the most significant global and American events.
The news service first launched in September 1927, becoming over the decades a platform for some of the most famous media voices in the history of American journalism, including Edward R. Murrow, Robert Trout, Douglas Edwards, Charles Osgood, Dan Rather, and many other familiar and trusted voices over its decades of operation.
Veteran broadcaster Steve Kathan, host of CBS World News Roundup, stated that the network’s shutdown represents “a loss for a true American institution that played a pivotal role in the history of news media.”
For his part, Dan Rather described the broadcast as an essential part of what unified Americans for many years, emphasizing that it helped deliver news to the public before the advent of television and modern media.
The network’s management announced in March its decision to close the news service, justifying it by the difficult economic challenges facing the media sector.
In an official statement, CBS News President Tom Cibrowski and Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss praised the historical role the broadcast played since its inception, affirming that it was foundational to what the media institution built over the past decades.
The statement noted that the World News Roundup program remained the longest-running radio news broadcast in the United States.
Throughout its history, the broadcast covered many pivotal events in modern history, including the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Normandy landings during World War II, the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, the Gulf War, the September 11 attacks, and the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003.
The broadcast also aired the first coverage of the World Series baseball games in 1938 and conducted a famous interview with baseball legend Babe Ruth the following year.
Edward Murrow is one of the most prominent names associated with the network’s history, having delivered impactful field reports from Europe during World War II and from London during the German bombings, in addition to his coverage of the Nazi Buchenwald camp after the German forces withdrew.
One of his most famous radio phrases during the war was: “I am not looking for dramatic words… I am just reporting what I saw.”
Correspondent Alison Keyes also recalled her coverage of the September 11 attacks from Lower Manhattan, affirming that the public needed to know what was happening in real-time and without politicization.
In the final days before the broadcast ceased, network employees expressed their sadness over the closure of the institution they considered an important part of the history of American radio journalism.
Keyes stated that the disappearance of the broadcast would leave a huge void in the news field, adding that she felt proud to have worked within this historic institution.
